Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office

"Why women should be taken seriously in the workplace"

Lou's opinion ...

Lou Boxall-Davies, Head Of Planning at Morrisjones

According to the "XX Files", a research project by morrisjones&co, which aims to investigate and understand the gender gap in marketing, almost 60% of women living in metropolitan areas believe that men don't take women seriously in the work place because of their gender.

Are women really not taken seriously by men? Or is it just a case of perceived gender discrimination on the part of women?

Well, these are the same women who believe that there are many career opportunities available to them. They are willing to study further to advance their position in the workplace and many are also driven to succeed in their chosen career. So, it is probably fair to assume that this is more than just a gender persecution complex.

So what's the explanation?

How To Negotiate Your Way To Success Without Selling Your Soul
Deal Diva

Why are women still not equal to men, either in the home or in the workplace? Although much lip service has been paid in recent years to women having ‘arrived' in the traditional domain of men – that of business – if you look just beneath the surface, you will find that they are paid less, are not promoted as readily and are generally not taken as seriously as men. But who is to blame? A big part of the problem is women themselves. They don't know how to get what they want. In short, they do not know how to negotiate.

By the end of this enlightening and empowering book, the reader will have recaptured her lost negotiating instincts and life skills. She will become the deal-making diva she's always dreamt of being, and she will be able to make the deals that she wants.

"Eating Out" With Industry Leaders

Ross Chowles, Executive Creative Director of The Jupiter Drawing Room-CT

Ambience vs. Love

Having travelled across China, finding authentic Chinese cuisine in Cape Town is a battle, but not an insurmountable one. The sweet and sour pork offered by ‘Mr. Wok' down the road is as authentic Chinese as someone flipping a burger on a gas Weber and passing it off as a Braai.

Authentic Chinese cuisine is delicate, flavourful and normally very fresh and tender. It is said that with Chinese cuisine, the chef does all of the work as all the ingredients are chopped small enough to be picked up with a chopstick – you just eat. Most Chinese dishes are cooked with lashings of garlic and ginger.

Visiting 2 Chinese restaurants, one top end and one at the opposite end of the scale, I found what I was looking for: flavour and succulence.

Starting with Haiku (58 Burg Street Off Green Market Square) and although they market themselves as Asian tapas or fusion, the menu is ostensibly Chinese. After all, the chefs are from Guangdong, Shanghai and Sichuan.

A Sneak Peak Into The Life Of A Group Financial Director

Bennie van Rooy, Group Financial Director: The JD Group

1. How did you get into the industry?

The multi-disciplinary nature of the financial management/accounting field has always attracted me, because even though there are numerous jokes about accountants and their boring personalities, I am part of a very dynamic world where I am exposed to and expected to provide solutions on a variety of problems that don't yet exist in the minds of others. If it is not mergers and acquisitions, it is tax structures, incentive schemes, exciting business opportunities, statistical provisioning models, risk management, option pricing theories, people issues and the list continues.

I had a very successful career in the banking world where I was exposed to a variety of highly intellectual and technically complex areas such as capital management, Basel II, quantitative risk models and the like, which was very stimulating, but I experienced great difficulty explaining it to my parents and siblings. I guess I needed a new challenge where I could experience the same level of intellectual stimulation, but also become involved in more practical day-to-day business operations. Where better to be than the JD Group where we sell affordable commodities and credit solutions to the mass-middle market.

The position itself is like living in a dream world. I am really fortunate to be in this position and am grateful to a few very special individuals for this opportunity.

And yes, I am changing the popular perception that accountants can enjoy themselves, take risks and have fun!

2. If you weren't in this industry, what would you want to be doing?

Playing golf and having sundowners.

3. When you were six, ten, and sixteen, what were your dream jobs?

Six – Veterinarian (I was so impressed by the way in which the vet treated my sick dog)
Ten – Astronaut (not a lot of imagination)
Sixteen – Writer (can you imagine the amount of free time?)

I Know The Colour Of Your Underwear

By Chris Brewer

Brewer's Droop
Thursday, 02 September 2010

Once, when I was a private detective (oh yes I was) I found a missing lady and was smacked in the mouth by her boyfriend (there's gratitude for you). I mention it because it used to take a long time to get details on people, and even then it was only scant information.

These days it's so easy.

If I put my mind to it I can get just about all the details I'd ever want about someone. Take a recent job application for example.

A pleasant young lady applied to me for a data-capturing position and brought all the right paperwork with her. As an aside, I have employed a lot of people over the years and I can't remember EVER checking a reference. I mean what's the point? No applicant is stupid enough to give me the name of someone who's only going to confirm that she's a habitual coke snorter – or is she?
