Getting To Know You
Which cause is close to your heart and how do you assist it?

Our environment and nature are close to my heart and I do my best to recycle as much as I can. I've recently completed the training to assist as a volunteer at the Two Oceans Aquarium which will give me an opportunity to share environmental knowledge about our marine life to a wider audience. My first shift is in a week's time and I'm quite excited.

What is one thing would you like to do before you die?

Only one? I could list 20 things I'd like to do before I turn 40. The one thing I have to do before I die is go scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef.

Can you share one idea that someone could put into practice that would help them to improve their networking skills?

To say yes before you say no. Yes to invitations, yes to new experiences and yes to any opportunity that will allow you to meet someone new, especially if it's something you don't feel like doing. The only way to be in the right place at the right time is to actually be out there.

What do you do in your spare time to blow off steam or relax?

Between running, swimming, going to gym, hiking, drawing, photography, crocheting spending time with family and friends, my 2 favourite pastimes to relax are reading on the beach in summer or exploring wine farms in winter.

What is the best lesson you have learnt that has stood you in good stead?

It's a cliché, but I truly believe that you cannot judge a book by its cover (unless it's a portfolio of course). Many years ago when I was assisting my father in our family furniture business, an elderly disheveled lady came into the shop and was just browsing. None of the staff on the floor took any notice of her because she "clearly" had no money to spend, but as I had nothing better to do, I chatted to her and showed her around. When the time came for her to purchase what she'd been eyeing, she stuck her hand into her bra and pulled out wads and wads of cash. She'd been saving for many years to buy exactly what she wanted and that was the day she'd decided to buy. On the flipside it's only human to be impressed by flashy things, but it can be misleading and I often have to do a double take to ensure I'm listening with my heart and mind rather than judging by appearances.

When you were six, ten and sixteen, what were your dream jobs?

At six I wanted to be a hairdresser. My sub A teacher had hair down to her bottom and I used to brush it for hours. At 10 I wanted to be a secret agent. I liked the idea of scaling buildings in the still of the night and cracking complex codes to safes using fancy weapons and driving a really, really fast car. At sixteen I wanted to be a designer or massage therapist. Design won in the end.

Everything in moderation, but ........... love.

Perfect happiness is ........ feeling the hugs and hearing the laughter of small children, especially my nieces and nephew.

I cannot live without ......... family, friends and floss.

My pet peeve is ... paying for parking and having parking attendants hovering around.

I have always wanted to ............ learn to surf (this summer).

Life is ......... to be lived.
