ANNUAL AD TALENT CONFERENCE

We held our annual conference in September. As always it's an opportunity for the whole company to get together to share ideas, plot the way forward, develop strategies, take a long hard look at our business and the industry and of course to have some fun. These are always great occasions where we do lots of work on the back of some serious partying.

Are you Missing Out On Exceptional Marketing Candidates?

We, as recruiters, understand that first choice when looking for marketing staff is to brief us for candidates who have the relevant industry experience. It makes sense that an FMCG company would want the prospective candidate to have exactly that experience. BUT, there is a huge skills shortage in this country. Good candidates are able to pick and choose, so why not be open-minded and progressive in your approach?

The Industry Rests. Read How....

Joy Turnbull, Deputy MD, Network BBDO, Johannesburg

What does the festive season hold for me?
Let me start by saying that I absolutely LOVE the festive season. I love the Christmas decorations in the shopping malls, I love the vibe of late night shopping, I love thinking of my gift list and finding that perfect present for each special person in my life. I love Christmas carols and hearing them everywhere. I love spending time with my family over the Christmas period and the delicious, enormous (eat as much as you can) Christmas lunch. And most importantly the holiday that goes with it all.

This year I will be spending some of my holiday time with a special family very close to me heart in Kenton-on-Sea, followed by some more time with 3 very special friends in Cape Town.

This past year has been a time of rejuvenation for me, in every aspect of my life and I can't wait to relax for 3 weeks in anticipation of 2008 and what it holds for me.

Merry merry everyone ... May your festive season be just as special and rewarding as I know mine will be.

Angel Jones, Executive Creative Director, Morris Jones, Johannesburg

Beach sand in sandwiches; sangria sunsets; and Christ's light in our souls

Clinton Mitri, Operations Director, Network BBDO

"My 3 sons come from Cape Town for a 4 week vacation to Johannesburg. This year we are spending most of our time at the Vaal Dam , skiing , tennis , golf , fishing and just generally being outdoors and enjoying the weather and water. Just spending quality time with the family is very important to me over the festive season."

Lyn Wilson, Marketing Communications Manager, Educor, Cape Town

  • Bantry Bay sunsets in my new apartment
  • My grandson's hand in mine and his shrieks of delight at seeing "penguins" for the first time in REAL LIFE (not on Animal Planet)
  • My 1st Christmas as a "Capetonian" - not sure whether this should fill me with joy or trepidation or both seeing that this time, I'll have to deal with the onslaught ... intend to do so as elegantly and graciously as possible
  • A new home, new job, new team, 17 x new campaigns successfully to market, new life ...
  • A sigh and a HUGE smile that "all is well" and we truly are, so very blessed!

Neil Robinson, Business Unit Director, JWT, Cape Town

Spending time with family in Australia (my second home) - as time is our one and only luxury in a very frenetic world. Over this time one gets to, once again, appreciate what's really important in life - we tend to lose sight of this in the endless battle to assist our clients in improving brand rating points, sales uplift and the constant battle against the pressing deadline!

Mama Naledi Advises

Dear Mama Naledi

SALARY INCREASES

I have been with my company for one year now and there has been no mention of a salary increase. Am I entitled to an annual increase?

Tumi

Hi Tumi

Salary increases are not regulated by labour legislation, except where otherwise stated in an agreement, such as your letter of appointment. There is no obligation on the employer to grant annual increases.

Hi Mama

MATERNITY LEAVE ENTITLEMENT

I have recently fallen pregnant with my first baby and am confused about what my leave entitlement is. However, I cannot afford not to work. Help!

"Feeling Swell"

Hi "Feeling Swell"

Firstly - heartiest congratulations! This is an exciting and confusing time. Maternity leave is four (4) months unpaid leave. The maternity leave commences one month before the expected date of the birth of the child and you may not return to work for six weeks after the birth of the child unless you have written permission from a doctor or midwife.

The Act does not stipulate at what stage of the pregnancy you are obliged to inform your employer of your pregnant condition, only that you must notify your employer in writing of the date on which you intend to further commence maternity leave and the date on which you intend to return to work.

The Act further stipulates that written notice must be given to your employer at least four weeks before the commencement of your maternity leave. Your employer is obliged to keep your job open. You cannot be dismissed on grounds of pregnancy.

Any arrangements between you and your employer and payment of salary or benefits during maternity leave, remains a matter between you and your employer and has nothing to do with any provision of the Act. You MUST enquire at the Department of Labour regarding maternity benefits payable in terms of UIF.

Lots of luck
Mama

"Young Stars" Under 10 Soccer Team

Zaki Cassim and Yusuf Deraj of Crosby, Johannesburg were most concerned that the children of their neighbourhood had no healthy after school recreational activity and they were being subjected to drugs and alcohol which are so readily available to our youth.

Their vision was to build and provide a base for the youth of Crosby (a suburb in the south of Johannesburg) as well as surrounding suburbs to unite for the pure love and enjoyment of sport and to participate with the true spirit of developing good sportsmanship and friendship between them.
