Finding your first job as a Creative
You have just graduated and you are raring to go! Unfortunately it's not going to be an easy road to that first job and it gets tougher every year as the graduates get better prepared and smarter.
BUT, don’t give up, here are some helpful tips…
Remember that the interviewer will be as interested in your portfolio as in you, so be sure that your portfolio is put together neatly and remember to sell your work (i.e. ensure that you put across your thought process and big idea). Don’t forget. You need to sell your work as well as yourself.
Portfolio Tips
- Ensure it is put together creatively and neatly
- Put your best work up front
- If you are presenting TV and Radio scripts, take the interviewer through it, don’t expect the interviewer to read it
- If there is work in portfolio that you aren’t proud of, then take it out! If you don’t like it, then guaranteed the interviewer won’t either
- If you are going for a web/multimedia design position, speak to them in a language that is relevant i.e. present your portfolio on a disc.
- Multimedia/web designers – it is recommended to put your portfolio together in a theme instead of loose files.
Remember: you are creative - be creative when you are applying for that job –
You have 5 seconds to make that first impression...
